The Dead
The stomping could be heard as Maria walked out of the school corridor. There hovering above the cloud was a ship so high that anyone else would think it was a rocket but it wasn’t it was a ship. Then suddenly a man walked down the stairs clutching Sarah and Luke by the scruff of their necks.
“Maria help” cried Luke.
Maria sprinted to the left, but the ship was too fast sending out silvery claw like hands that glistened in the sunlight to catch her. She was lifted off the ground, spun round twice and plummeted back down, where she landed face first on the muddy floor which had just been below her.
Suddenly, she woke up startled and looked around the room she now found herself in. She recognised this room all too well with her familiar bed and the voices coming from the T.V, she must have fallen asleep watching. Another episode of friends great! She glanced at the T.V again, great a wedding, as if Maria didn’t need another reminder. Reluctantly she pulled herself out of bed and walked to the window she picked up a white envelope and looked inside again like she had for the last 5 months, she read.
“Dear Maria you are invited to Chrissie and Ivan’s wedding”. Below were the dates., next Saturday at 12:45. Maria couldn’t wait to see Sarah, Luke, and Clyde again and meet this new girl Rani. I wonder what she’s like thought Maria as she lay down on the mattress and dozed off.
The other side of the world Rani was running down the street. Who would have thought that a thing which looked like a snail would turn out to be an alien? She thought to herself as she turned the corner, to find Sarah Jane, Luke and Clyde stood there looking down at the alien with a tin blue dog next to them. K-9.
“K-9 go to defence mode just in case he trys to escape” said Sarah
“Affirmative master” K-9 answered back
Clyde pulled out a thin black net from behind his back and dropped it over the creature. Luke quickly picked up the net and tied it quickly. All of a sudden, a loud thud of footsteps echoed across the alleyway all four characters turned to look at one another as a thin dark man runs towards Sarah Jane, only to stop in front of her and collapse suddenly into a heap on the floor.
“Who’s he?” asked Rani, they all glanced towards the perspiring heap that still lay in front of Sarah Jane.
“I don’t know, but we can’t just leave him here.” Said Sarah Jane quickly, as she pointed to Luke and Clyde to help her move him. They were just about to leave the alleyway when suddenly the heap that had once lay in front of Sarah Jane got up and ran.
“What just happened?” Clyde said puzzled as he watched the man run down the street and into the distance.
“I don’t know but it can’t be anything to worry about can it mum? Luke said looking really unsure at Sarah Jane who was still staring into the distance like a thousand ideas were rushing into her head.
“I really don’t know. But i do know one thing I am really thirsty does anybody want a cup of tea?” she asked as she casually made her way back up the alleyway where the strange figure had just ran to and up the never-ending familiar drive.
“Something is up!” cried Rani
“What do you mean?” asked Luke
“Well Sarah Jane normally doesn’t just forget something like that happening then just goes off for a cup of tea!” said Rani as they walked to the front door and peered inside, looking for Sarah Jane.
Quietly they all walked into the house watching the creaky floorboards so they didn’t make a sound. They walked down the corridor and opened the door and popped their heads through. But she wasn’t there.
“That’s weird.” Exclaimed Clyde as they pushed the door open and walked inside
“If she’s not here then where is she?” asked luke looking out into the back garden to see if his mam was out doing the final bit of gardening before the sun went down. But to his surprise she wasn’t. They all turned round and went out the door and up to the attic.
When they reached the stairs they breathed a sigh of relief. They could already hear her voice. They tip toed in.
“Mum what’s wrong?” asked Luke as he walked past her to have a look at what she had asked Mr Smith to search for. Looking at the list is was people who had died. “Mum why are you looking at a list of the latest dead people?” Luke said turning round to see Rani and Clyde stepping away from Sarah Jane.
“Well that man that fainted. I knew him.” She said gazing out into Banrerman road whispering as if he was in the room. . “His name was Kevin peters I did a story on him a lot of years ago.”
“After travelling with the doctor? Or while you were travelling with the doctor? ” Asked Clyde not caring he had interrupted her.
“After i had been with the doctor, the thing is the story that i did about was when he was involved in a car crash, which took his life.” Sarah Jane was shaking now tears starting to roll down her eyes. Luke strolled over and put his arm round her. “But he was dead the police said he was dead.
“He couldn’t have died. He was walking round outside. You saw him.” Rani said. “And what does that have to do with the newly dead?”
“Well when i was looking on the internet i came up with this awful story, about a Granddad who had just suddenly started walking around but... he had been dead for 5 months.” She said turning round to look at the shocked faces. “When i saw Kevin again it reminded me about what I had seen on the internet .”
“So Sarah Jane are you saying that dead people are running round the streets.” Asked Clyde. As he and Rani walked forward.
“Not everyone is coming alive. And how many people do you know who just get up and start walking?” asked Sarah Jane starting to type on Mr Smiths keyboard.
“Frankenstein, Dracula.” Said Clyde laughing at his own joke.
“Now Mr Smith which alien can bring people back from the dead?” asked Sarah Jane.
“Sarah Jane this may take some time. Let me look through my data records.” Mr Smith boomed back bringing different aliens up and bringing up their abilities on the screen.
“But why would anyone bring the dead back to life?” asked Rani watching Mr Smith
“And why?” Said Luke moving so he was now in front with Rani
“Sarah Jane I have conducted my search.” Mr Smith said interrupting before anymore conversations could crop up.
“And” said Sarah Jane as her and Clyde stepped to where Rani and Luke where.
“I have found no aliens that could survive on earth, which have the power to bring the dead to life.” Said Mr Smith.
“So are you saying I am making this up?” asked Sarah Jane looking yet again outside the red and green window.
“No but i am saying you may have seen the wrong man.” Mr Smith said answering back very quickly.
“Well maybe.” Sarah Jane said as if she didn’t want him to hear. “Come on then, i forgot you kids hadn’t had any lunch. Let’s have some lunch and then fix the snail like creatures ship.” And with that they all walked down stairs.
Maria pulled her suitcase over to the car. A Honda just like the one they had in America. Her stomach rumbled she hadn’t had anything to eat; the food on the plane looked awful.
“Come on then, its nice of Sarah Jane to put you up while i go and live with your granddad.” Said Alan picking up Maria’s fully packed suite case and putting it in the boot.
“Well she said Rani had been dying to meet me.” Maria said with a gleaming smile
“Who would be dying to meet you”. Said Alan laughing at his joke as he got in to the driver’s seat. And with that Maria set off to Banrerman road.
Sarah Jane had just pulled the new quilt over the guest’s bed. When thought’s started popping into her head like when her and Maria made the machine to help find the lost kids, and the sontaran when they only had 40 minutes to save the world. Then Maria moved to America with her dad, but now she was coming back to see her mam get married to Ivan. The doorbell rang Sarah Jane thought she had better go and get that Luke, Rani and Clyde would be too busy.
Maria heard footsteps on the other side of the door before it opened, and before she knew what was happening there was two arms round her.
“Sarah Jane. I have missed you so much.” Said Maria as she pulled her suite case into the house.
“Me too. So how is America?” Sarah Jane asked.
“Not as good as been here.” Maria said as she followed Sarah Jane up the stairs.
Maria missed Sarah Jane and them so much when she was in America. But now she was back everything would be normal again.
“You must not go in the attic.” Sarah Jane said opening the door to the room Maria would be staying in.
“Why not?” Maria asked with a puzzled face.
“Mr Smith is looking after this-err snail creature.” Sarah Jane said as she made her way to the doorway. “I best go and see your dad. Luke, Rani and Clyde will be back soon.” And with that she left Maria.
Maria sat on the bed wounded like a solider what had happened to Sarah Jane while she had been away? Maria got up and looked out the window her dad’s car was there but no Sarah Jane or dad in the car. The only person on the street was a man walking round as if he had just come back alive and everything was new to him. I bet Luke and the rest are upstairs in the attic thought Maria and before she could stop herself she was climbing the stairs to the attic. She opened the door to find... a big banner with welcome home on it. Luke stood in front of it with Clyde and a girl. Rani. To the left of Rani were Sarah Jane and Alan, plus Mr Smith showing a photo of them together.
After 3 hours of non stop talking Alan though he had best go to his dads as it was getting late. Maria helped Luke, Rani and Clyde take the banners down before heading off to bed. She reached the landing her bedroom was on when she heard a noise, as if someone was trying to hide.
“See you tomorrow.” Called Clyde
“It was really nice to meet you.” Called Rani
“It was nice to meet you too”. Maria shouted back.
She opened her bedroom door to find a pink light, which lighted up the room.
“What the-“Said Maria trying not to shake.
The light suddenly turned round and flew past Maria out onto the landing. Maria sprinted after it. Running down the stairs as fast as she could.
“Maria what’s wrong?” cried Luke following her
“The light Luke it’s moving.”
“Mum!” shouted Luke
Sarah Jane was at the bottom of the stairs when suddenly the light disappeared. There was a knock at the front door, then another. Then the door opened.
“Mum what’s going on?” asked Luke
“I don’t know. Get behind me kids.” Sarah Jane said.
Maria and Luke ran behind her and then the visitor entered. It was Kevin peters walking through the door. But this time he wasn’t alone!

I love the creepiness of this story, but it's great that it also really gets into Maria's head and has some sweet character moments.
I'm a big fan of the macabre, and it's an area we definitely haven't explored on the SJA so far, so kudos for trying something new with the format! I'm not sure that the experiment is best suited to a kid's series, mind - but it's a valant effort and for that alone the author should give themselves a well deserved pat on the back.
I've always wanted to see SJA take a darker tone, so this story was a real treat! Very chilling, I'll certainly be sleeping with one eye open tonight! Love to see this continued past the cliffhanger!
