Sarah Jane Adventures – The Blue Sky Operation

It was an average day on Bannerman Road. The birds sang sweetly in the trees and cars sped up and down the road. Otherwise it was quiet. Sarah Jane Smith who lives at number 13 Bannerman Road, was sat in the living room. Suddenly there was a knock on the door, she sat up and closed her laptop and placed it on the coffee table before getting up and approaching the front door. She opened the door, a stern looking woman faced her. She was wearing a black skirt and blouse with black boots, she had auburn coloured hair scraped back in a bun with a sinister smile accompanied by deep rouge lips. She also wore rectangular spectacles giving her an air of intelligence. “Miss Smith” she began, “You have been recommended from various sources as a suitable journalist  to have a look at our new facilities”. She pushed her glasses up her nose and looked at Sarah Jane. “Really? I suppose I could do with a new story. What facility is this?”. The woman looked at her clipboard. “It is a facility which ferries cargo around the country, they currently make a fortune!”. “Which company is this?”, by this time Sarah Jane had retrieved a notebook and pencil and was scribbling down information. “This company is called Blue Sky, Miss Smith, would you be interested?”. “Certainly, I will have my PA give you a ring”. The woman exchanged business cards and they shook hands politely. Sarah Jane shut the heavy door and walked back into the living room and jumped happily. It had been a long while since a proper journalist job and it was time to get back on with journalism.

The next day Sarah Jane was ready for the visit. “Blue Sky?” questioned Clyde. “Yes Clyde, they have an impeccable record and they are making millions from haulage and cargo! It is a quick easy job and it needs reviewing”, “I know what it is Sarah Jane, Mum has got a job there. She is the PA to the directors. It’s a funny place, no one knows what the cargo is.. The workers are just weird and the directors, well who are they is the big question!”.  Sarah Jane narrowed her eyes at Clyde. “I will have a look around Clyde, besides I need a ‘work experience’ anyway! Accompany me but you must be careful. I want to meet the directors and find out what the cargo is just to be on the safe side”, Clyde nodded at Sarah Jane. Luke stood and watched them. “Luke, I want you and Mr Smith to check their encrypted files for data. We might get a clue as to who the directors are.” Luke nodded and headed upstairs.

Sarah Jane and Clyde headed to the green car that rested on the driveway. Clyde climbed in the back as Rani strode up the drive a little clueless. “Sarah Jane? Where are you taking Clyde?” she asked. “Clyde and I are taking a review of the Blue Sky Cargo facility, you can accompany Luke, he is in the attic”, she nodded at Rani as she went inside the house. Sarah Jane climbed into the car and started the engine. “Promise me Clyde, to be careful, although it may be normal, it has the hallmarks of a trap. I should have seen it, a woman coming out of the blue offering me a job. Someone wants my attention!” she put the car into gear. She sped out of the driveway and disappeared in a cloud of exhaust fumes up the road.

Two large iron gates swung open.  A security officer approached the car. Sarah Jane wound down her window and explained her reason. The man replied in a surly manner, he was a tall, strong built man who would look better in the zoo with the gross attitude he attended to visitors. He waved her in to the car park. There were no less than 3 cars on the vast car park, “Stuck for choice here!” he joked. Sarah Jane parked in a random space and opened her door and grabbed her handbag, thrusting the door shut, she locked it and approached the building with her mini entourage.

They walked into the reception. Another stern looking woman peered at her from behind a desk; she thrust her pen to the desk and picked up the telephone. “Miss Smith has arrived” she bellowed down the phone and slammed it on the receiver. “I guess you mum isn’t so rude? And someone knows I am already here!” Sarah Jane said to Clyde. “She works one day a week usually” Clyde replied following Sarah Jane to a room in the next room. They entered the room; the woman from the door was standing there. “Ahh! Miss Smith, it’s smashing to see you! Would you like the tour?” she said, “Yes that would be great” Sarah Jane replied reluctantly.

They came to the warehouse. There were thousands upon thousands of crates all stamped and sealed for various destinations across the country. “So what is it in those crates then what’s being imported?” Sarah Jane was brimming with questions and wanted to know. “I’m sorry Miss Smith, that is packing and loading departments, I am not in that area” she was sweating slightly. “I would like to see the contents for my report; can you take me to packing?” Sarah Jane narrowed her eyes. “I am sorry it appears to be their lunch break, you may not be able to see the contents”, she shuffled her feet nervously. “And another thing, I want to see the directors! I need an opinion!”. “They are not available right now Miss Smith, Organise an appointment as soon as possible”. “Excuse me, I am a little confused. The directors are non-existent and the content of the cargo is a mystery, I need to know to complete my report!” Sarah Jane was delving more and more into the questions. The woman was close to anger. Her temper was rising and she mopped her sweaty brow before clenching her fists. “Miss Smith!”She scolded, “It is impossibility right now! Now I suggest you leave!!”, “Then I will have a look myself”, Sarah Jane charged past the woman and headed for the end of the aisle taking fast anticipating strides. She came to the end of the aisle when she heard it. A bolt of energy thrust her in the back. She flew to the ground in a heap and blacked out. The woman approached her whose hair had become wild. She overlooked Sarah Jane. “I believed this would end horribly wrong. Now I believe the directors want to see you! Sarah Jane Smith!” She chuckled menacingly.

In a darkened office, Sarah Jane opened her eyes slowly. It was dark, with a tiny blue light shining her in the face. From what little field of vision she had she could see the writhing in the chair next to her. He too had been tied up and was attempting to free himself. “Clyde?” she whispered “Are you ok? I am so sorry; I never noticed you’d gone missing”. Clyde sighed in relief and quit struggling for the moment. He began whimpering. “She’s in on it. Mum is part of this!” Clyde cried as he hung his head low. Sarah Jane looked apologetic and then gathered her thoughts. “Don’t panic I will sort this out Clyde, I just need to reach Luke and Rani at home! I have a plan!” A voice boomed from no-where. “Miss Smith, I have been expecting you!” the voice boomed. Sarah Jane grimaced. The lights flickered on. Aghast, Sarah Jane gasped. A smartly dressed man stood before her with a nice suit and a neat haircut. The bottom half of his body was the real surprise. Eight slimy tentacles trailed on the floor leaving grey mucus sticking to the cold tiles. “Octowussy!” cried Clyde attempting to insult Clyde. The creature glared at him, he turned and thrust one of his grimy tentacles around his neck. “Speak to me like that again child and I will squeeze you like an orange! Package you up and send you one of them crates!” it hissed. “Get off him! What are you anyway Bane?”. “No” hissed the creature, “The Bane are useless creatures! I am head Jorkan Faze! Of the Jorkan Finance Empire!”. “Jorkan? I had a run-in with one of you on Galliatrosis 9, a nasty arms deal!” Sarah Jane spluttered. “How is that possible? Its three and a half galaxies away!” it hissed in her space spitting saliva everywhere. “My friend, The Doctor, he’d see to you! Like I will!”, “I know of no Doctor!” it roared back. “Maybe you wouldn’t want to!” Clyde remarked. The creature glared at Clyde again, “I warned you! But you didn’t listen!” he reached out to strangle Clyde but Sarah Jane flew in his way knocking both their chairs over. “Now I summoned you here Sarah Jane for this very moment, your crimes against races of alien beings would have been a caution to my operations! Destroy the cause and I will have free run!”  The creature hissed. “But what about the ‘impeccable source’?” she gasped. “The Sontaran you apprehended fled to the stars from you! I intercepted his scout ship and questioned him! However Rutan fighters shot our ship down banishing us to this world. Forced to ship cargo out to earn enough money to build the greatest ship to launch back home!”. “Well why cause this fuss and eliminate me?” Sarah Jane cried. “You would probably find our little plan rather obscene, but it pays beautifully!” he chuckled raucously. Suddenly a gun sound came from outside, Sarah Jane winced in anticipation, any minute she was about to be found and probably eliminated along with poor Clyde who lay helpless on the floor. The door flung open, Sarah Jane closed her eyes; she heard footsteps behind her approaching. “Mum!” cried a voice. Sarah Jane sighed in relief. “Luke!” The alien looked at Luke menacingly. “You enter!!  Who are you?” it hissed. “I am Luke Smith and I believe you have my mum and best friend. He aimed a cylinder at the creature, “Stun probe! I can stun you now let them go please!” Luke shouted. “No!” screamed the Jorkan. Bang! Luke stunned the creature and dropped to the floor and untied Sarah Jane and Clyde who sat up and sighed in relief. “Are you ok Mum?”  Luke was trying to re-assure her. “Yes erm where is Rani? I need to check out that warehouse, I need to see the contents of them crates!” Sarah Jane got up offering Clyde a hand. They exited the office and headed down the hallway where Rani was waiting standing over two stunned security guards. “Good going Rani! You zapped that moody old twit! High five”, they slapped hands and continued following Sarah Jane into the warehouse. “How did you know where to find me?” Sarah Jane wondered. “We know what is in the crates Sarah Jane. It’s not nice. Meat appears to be on the expensive side these days. Using an easy accessible resource makes a cheap substitute!” Rani explained. “No” chirped Clyde, “They’re selling us, they are chopping up and packaging up knock off human meat! Who are these creeps? We need a plan we bomb this base, to stop the mass slaughter!” They stared at Clyde. “Clyde, you are a warped individual, too many videogames I think” replied Luke. “No Sarah Jane, I wonder if you’ll pass the exams Clyde!” Rani staring at Clyde, “They are using animals like cats and dogs, rats and mice, processing the lot and selling it”. “Yes they have no clue about human consumption and pricing. They can get it all and sell it at rock bottom prices, they’ll be raking in the money!”. “At the cost of lives and health” insisted Luke. “Yes, In which case, I think I’ll leave the inspection to the environmental health”. At the other side of the warehouse there were giant double doors. “Now I understand they were building a spaceship to get home”.

They entered the building. They spied a ship in the corner. It was the size of a car and was in pieces. “That’s been crashed and that’s not being renovated! He is lying”, they were about to turn back when the Jorkan found them holding a black pistol. “Alright, so you’ve found me out, Bravo!” It uttered at the others. “Operation Blue Sky is go!” as he said it the crates all disappeared in blue light. Sarah Jane realised, “You scavenged your ship! For components of teleport system, very high-tech! Now you deliver... Globally!” she gasped. “Yes, there is a recession in the skies Miss Smith! And Earth is land opportunity! Thousands of crates of meat delivered worldwide, to a hungry world! I knew that wretched cheetah planet would become useful! Hahaha!” he chuckled. “Mass illness and death! That meat is unsafe! They’ll all die!” Luke was shocked. “Yes, then I scavenge this earth using the teleport systems and take the money and run! Stellios Minor craves Earth currency! I could retire and become a multi-zillion tycoon! Think of the publicity also!” his eyes glistened in gluttony. “That’s horrific” explained Rani. “Well Jorkan, I can withdraw those crates with a little present I got from my Doctor”. “Pah!” scoffed the Jorkan, “Yes, sonic lipstick! I can harness the teleport network and bring them back!” Sarah Jane smirked. She withdrew her sonic from her handbag and brought it towards the Jorkan. She buzzed it and a noise sounded, a rippling sound filled the warehouse as the crates retracted back into place, not a slip out of place. The Jorkan stared in disbelief, and growled ominously. He twirled his tentacles frantically and lunged at Sarah Jane. “Never touch her again” shouted Clyde. He grabbed the human arm of the Jorkan and yanked up the sleeve revealing a blue arm ring which glowed blue. He pulled the ring off the arm and threw it on the floor. “Lovely, I am not shaking hands with you again! How rude” he stuck his tongue out to joke. “What’s happening to me?” groaned the Jorkan. “You see” Clyde began, “I learnt something Rani, detention with Mr Johns! I learnt that blue-ringed octopuses! Are the deadly ones to humans.  And when I was captured, tentacle Tom here, He had normal legs. He put the ring on and huzzah! Tentacles appear! So I thought if he doesn’t have a blue ring, he’s not necessarily deadly!”. The team just stood with their jaws open, Clyde giggled like a seven year old. “Clyde, I’m sorry for doubting you...” Rani shook hands with him and went back to Sarah Jane who was disarming the Jorkan. “How will I get home?” the Jorkan screamed. “In three weeks time, an Arkan space corps will cross the skies of London I will deter one and it will take you home” Sarah Jane winked at him.

“And as for the humans you enslaved, they will be deactivated” Sarah Jane whispered as she handcuffed the Jorkan and placed him on the backseat of the car. “So what was up with the staff?” Clyde asked. “Sleepers” Sarah Jane explained “They are all ok now, Mum won’t remember anything” she patted his shoulder comfortably. “Detective Inspector, The environmental agency have been summoned, and there are two assailants in the basement.  All the equipment and crates should be destroyed. Please hand over to UNIT, regarding the assailants”, Sarah Jane dismissed the police and returned to the car with Clyde. Luke and Rani stood at the car, “Ready Mum? Will we ever get a quiet day?” Luke questioned. “Doubt it” joked Rani. They both got into the car and waved at Clyde.  “Thanks Sarah Jane” said Clyde who hugged her tightly. “No thank you Clyde, you saved us!” she replied, “Thanks, Well I better find mum and walk her home” he smiled. He walked off with his hands in his pockets entering the grey building. Sarah Jane smiled warmly and then sat down in the car she turned on the engine and the car sped away into the distance. The sun was setting and the threat of an alien incursion, eight tentacled  monsters, invasions, death and chaos were at bay, for the time being at least.
Entry 3
HOME
An alien and accomplice that would fit well into the SJA series itself, although the motivation of selling human meat was perhaps more Torchwood's territory. Good to see Sarah Jane's journalistic skills taking her into the action and Clyde's mum making a reappearance!
It’s great to see Sarah using her journalism skills and asking the tough questions. Clyde is great in this story too, and I love how creepy it is.
We don't see nearly enough Sarah Jane/Clyde on the show, so it's a pleasure to read about them in this story. I'm surprised Rani wasn't hurt that Sarah Jane took him along to the factory for 'work experience' instead of her! 'Octowussy' made me giggle!
